The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offers official ways to amend a tax return after it has been assessed.

Doing it the right way keeps your tax history accurate and may change your refund, tax owing, or benefit amounts.

The two main official options for most individual taxpayers are:

Using ReFILE through certified tax software.

Completing Form T1‑ADJ (T1 Adjustment Request) and mailing it to the CRA.
You can also use the “Change my return” service in your CRA My Account to adjust lines online. All of these methods require that your return has already been assessed.

Why would you need to amend a tax return?

You may realize after filing that you:

Missed a T4, T5, or other tax slip.

Forgot to claim a deduction or credit such as medical expenses or RRSP contributions.

Need to correct an income amount or tax credit.

You cannot make changes for things like marital status, address, direct deposit information, or applying for a benefit through an amendment request.

Those updates are done separately in CRA My Account.

When can you amend a tax return?

You cannot request a change until after you receive your Notice of Assessment (NOA) from the CRA. This is the official summary of how the CRA assessed your tax return.

Once you have the NOA, you may request changes for that tax year. You can usually request adjustments going back up to 10 years for most tax years.

What is ReFILE and how does it work?

ReFILE is the CRA’s online service that lets you send corrected tax returns electronically through certified tax software. ReFILE is one of the easiest ways to amend a return if:

Your original tax return was filed electronically using NETFILE or EFILE‑certified software.

Your return has already been assessed.

The change you need to make affects income, deductions, or credits rather than personal profile details.
You typically use the same tax software you used to file the original return. The software pulls up your assessed return and lets you change the lines that need updating. Once complete, you submit the updated return through ReFILE to the CRA.

ReFILE is faster than mailing a paper form and avoids postage costs. Processing for a standard online adjustment is generally about two weeks once submitted.

The CRA will send a Notice of Reassessment showing the updated results after the adjustment is complete.

What is the T1‑ADJ Adjustment Request?

Form T1‑ADJ, T1 Adjustment Request is a paper form you can mail to the CRA when you cannot use ReFILE or when you prefer to send changes by mail.

This form lets you request changes to a previously filed tax return using paper documentation. You include:

Your Social Insurance Number (SIN).

The tax year you want to change.

Your corrected amounts and a description of the changes.

Any supporting documents that back up the changes, such as new slips or receipts.
Once the CRA receives your form, they will process it and reassess the return. Mailing this form typically takes longer to process than electronic methods.

How long does it take after you submit a request?

Processing times depend on the method you choose:

Online (ReFILE or “Change my return” in CRA My Account): usually processed in about two weeks for straightforward requests.

Mail (T1‑ADJ): paper adjustments take longer. The CRA estimates up to 30 weeks for standard cases and longer for more complex situations. You will receive a new Notice of Reassessment once the review is complete.

What happens after the CRA processes your amendment?

After the CRA reviews your requested adjustment, you will receive a Notice of Reassessment. This document shows the results of the changes and any effects on your:

Refund or balance owing.

Tax credits and deductions.

Benefits, such as the Canada Child Benefit or GST/HST credit.
If the CRA does not make the changes you requested, they will send a letter explaining why.

Can you amend more than one year at once?

Yes. You can request amendments for multiple tax years, but each year’s request must be submitted separately.

If you have more than one year with errors, you may combine them in one mailing by including separate T1‑ADJ forms for each year.

This gives the CRA all information they need to process each adjustment.

Can you use CRA My Account to adjust your return?

Yes. If you have a CRA My Account, you can log in and choose “Change my return”. This online feature lets you update details and resubmit amounts through the CRA secure portal.

It is similar to ReFILE but does not require tax software. Choose this option if you prefer adjusting the return directly within your account.

When you file your Canadian income tax return
