But many Canadians aren’t sure what happens next.

Once you receive your notice of determination, you can start claiming the DTC for the current tax year, previous eligible years, and future years as long as your approval remains valid.

What does the CRA approval letter mean?

The CRA sends a notice of determination once your Form T2201 is approved. The letter lists:

The tax years for which you are eligible.

Whether your approval is permanent or limited to specific years.

Instructions on how to claim the credit.

If your eligibility is indefinite, you can continue claiming the DTC each year without reapplying. If it’s time-limited, the CRA will note the last year you can claim it.

How to claim the Disability Tax Credit on your tax return

Once approved, you or your supporting family member can claim the credit on your income tax return.

On your T1 General, use:

Line 31600 for the disability amount for yourself.

Line 31800 if transferring the credit to a supporting person such as a parent or spouse.

The amount you can claim depends on the year and the federal and provincial disability amounts in effect. For 2025, the federal disability amount is up to $10,138, plus up to $5,914 for dependants under 18.

Can you back-claim previous years?

Yes. If your approval covers previous tax years, you can adjust up to 10 years of past returns under the Taxpayer Relief Provisions.

To do this, you must file a T1‑ADJ for each year you wish to adjust. You can do it:

Online through My Account, or

By mail using the printable form available on the CRA website.

The CRA will reassess your tax returns and send any refunds for those years if applicable.

Because the DTC is a non-refundable tax credit, the benefit comes as a reduction of tax you already paid, not a cash payment.

How far back can you go?

You can go back up to 10 years from the current tax year.

For example, if you are approved in 2026, you may request adjustments as far back as 2016. Each year must fall within the eligibility period stated in your CRA notice.

This is where some Canadians see total tax savings of several thousand dollars, sometimes described as receiving “up to $40,000” depending on income level, province, and number of years approved.

How does the DTC help in future years?

After approval, you can claim the DTC every year your certificate remains valid.

Each tax season:

Report the disability amount on your return.

If you don’t have taxable income, you may transfer the unused amount to a supporting person who pays income tax.

Keep your approval letter in your records in case the CRA requests verification.

If the CRA approved your DTC indefinitely, you do not need to resubmit Form T2201 each year. If your approval has an expiry, the CRA will contact you when it’s time to renew.

What other benefits can you access?

The DTC opens doors to additional federal and provincial programs, including:

The Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP): A long-term savings plan with government matching and bonds.

The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB): A new federal income support for working age Canadians with disabilities.

Various provincial disability programs that use DTC approval as eligibility proof.

DTC approval can also simplify applications for other tax credits and benefits tied to disability status.

How do you transfer the DTC to a family member?

If you qualify but have little or no taxable income, you can transfer the unused portion to a supporting person.

That could be a:

Spouse or common-law partner,

Parent or grandparent, or

Another relative who provides regular support.

They must have paid Canadian income tax to use the transferred amount.
