Most people must file and pay by one date. Self-employed individuals have a different filing deadline but the same payment deadline.

These rules come from the official Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) deadlines page and CRA personal income tax information.

When Is the General Tax Return Deadline in Canada for 2026?

For the 2025 tax year, the general tax return deadline in Canada is April 30, 2026. Most individuals must file their 2025 income tax return on or before this date.

This deadline also applies to paying any taxes owed for 2025.

What Is the Deadline for Self-Employed Canadians in 2026?

If you were self-employed in 2025, your tax return filing deadline is June 15, 2026. This later date applies to you and your spouse or common-law partner if either of you earned self-employment income in 2025.

However, even with a later filing date, any taxes you owe must still be paid by April 30, 2026. Interest is charged on unpaid amounts after April 30.

What Happens If I Miss the April 30 Deadline?

If you miss the April 30 deadline and you owe tax, the CRA will charge a late-filing penalty and interest. If you have a refund coming, filing late delays when you get that money.

The CRA explains penalties and interest on its official site. This applies whether you file late or pay late.

Can I File My Return Before April 30, 2026?

Yes. You can file your 2025 tax return any time after the tax season opens. The CRA opens its systems for electronic filing in February 2026.

Once the tax season opens, you can use CRA NETFILE-certified software or online services to submit your return. This does not change the deadline of April 30.

Do Self-Employed People Have to Pay Taxes by April 30?

Yes. Even though self-employed individuals have until June 15 to file, they must pay any tax owing by April 30, 2026. If you do not pay by this date, the CRA charges interest on the unpaid amount starting May 1. Filing later does not change the interest charges on unpaid tax. This rule is clearly stated by the CRA.

What Is the Deadline for Couples When One Person Is Self-Employed?

If either spouse or common-law partner earned self-employment income in 2025, the family can use the June 15, 2026 filing date. But the April 30 payment deadline still applies for taxes owed by either person.

This means a couple could file by June 15 with no penalty if both pay what they owe by April 30.

What Are the Filing Options and Methods?

You have three main ways to file your tax return in Canada:

1. NETFILE Certified Software
You can file electronically using software approved by the CRA. Once the tax season opens, you can send your return directly to the CRA.

2. CRA Online Services
If you have a CRA My Account, you can use the online services to file or review your information.

3. Paper Filing
You can mail a paper return to the CRA. Paper filing is slower and can take longer to process. You must still mail it early enough to reach the CRA by the deadline.

Is There a Separate Deadline for Benefits?

Some benefits are tied to when the CRA processes your return. For example, the GST/HST credit and other benefit payments are calculated after the CRA receives your 2025 tax return.

If you file late, your benefit payments may be delayed. Filing by the deadline helps ensure benefits are paid on time.

What Should I Do If I Cannot Pay What I Owe?

If you cannot pay your tax bill by April 30, 2026, you should still file on time to avoid penalties. Contact the CRA to discuss a payment arrangement. The CRA may allow you to pay your balance over time. Interest will still apply, but you may avoid further penalties if you make satisfactory arrangements.

Where Can I Find Official CRA Deadlines and Updates?

The best place for up-to-date deadlines, rules, and changes is the official Canada Revenue Agency website:

Important dates and deadlines for individuals

Get ready to file taxes

CRA tax tips for 2026 filing season

Tax return deadlines in Canada depend on your situation.
