Pension income includes payments from employer pension plans, Registered Retirement Income Funds (RRIFs), annuities, and other retirement sources.

Most pension income is taxable, and you must include it on your annual income tax return.

How much you pay depends on your total income, tax credits you can claim, and any pension income splitting you choose with your spouse.

What Counts as Pension Income for Tax Purposes

Pension income is the money you receive from retirement plans or income funds during retirement. Common types of taxable pension income include payments from Registered Pension Plans (RPPs), RRIFs that provide periodic payments, annuities, and certain superannuation plans.

You must report this income on the correct lines of your tax return. Payments from a private or employer pension plan are usually shown on T4A or T4RIF slips, and these amounts go on your return as part of your total income. This means the total amount of your income from all sources including pension payments is added together and taxed according to the federal and provincial tax brackets that apply to your total taxable income for the year.

There is no separate “pension tax rate.” Instead, the tax you pay on your pension depends on your marginal tax rate, which is the rate that applies to the highest portion of your income.

For 2025, federal tax rates range from 15 percent on the first portion of taxable income to 33 percent on higher income brackets, and each province adds its own tax rates.

If you have CPP or OAS payments, you must include them in your income when filing your tax return even if income tax was not deducted at source.

You can also choose to have tax withheld from CPP or OAS payments by Service Canada if you want to pre‑pay tax throughout the year.

How to Report Pension Income on Your Tax Return

When you file your annual tax return (T1), pension income is included in your total income on Line 15000. Specific amounts from pension plans are recorded on particular lines:

Line 11500: Other pension and superannuation amounts, including private pension plan payments.

Lines for CPP and OAS: These pensions have their own lines on the tax form and must be included in total income.

Once all income is added together, the CRA calculates your taxable income after deductions such as RRSP contributions or pension plan contributions.

After deductions, your net income determines your federal and provincial taxes payable.

How to Estimate the Tax on Your Pension

To estimate how much tax you will owe on your pension income:

Add all your income for the year, including pension income, CPP, OAS, and any other sources.

Subtract allowable deductions (such as RRSP contributions) to find your net income.
