How to Use the CRA Benefits Calculator (Step-by-Step)

This calculator helps estimate your Canada Child Benefit (CCB) and GST/HST credit based on your household income and family situation.

Follow these steps carefully to get the most accurate estimate.

Step 1: Enter Your Annual Household Income

  • Input your total household income before taxes
  • If you are married or in a common-law relationship, include both partners’ income

Example:

  • You earn $30,000
  • Your partner earns $20,000
    → Enter $50,000

Important:
Use your net income from your tax return (Line 23600) for better accuracy.

Step 2: Select Your Marital Status

Choose:

  • Single → if you are not married or in a common-law relationship
  • Married/Common-law → if you live with a partner

This affects how benefits are calculated, since the system is based on family income, not individual income.

Step 3: Enter Number of Children

You’ll need to split children into two age groups:

Children Under Age 6

  • Higher benefit amount
  • Enter total number of children aged 0–5

Children Age 6 to 17

  • Lower benefit amount than younger children
  • Enter total number of children aged 6–17

Example:

  • 1 child age 4
  • 2 children age 8 and 12
    → Under 6: 1
    → Age 6–17: 2

Step 4: Click “Calculate Benefits”

Once you click the button, the calculator will display:

Your Estimated Results

Canada Child Benefit (CCB)

  • Annual amount → total yearly benefit
  • Monthly amount → what you may receive each month

GST/HST Credit

  • Annual amount
  • Quarterly payment estimate

How the Calculator Works

This tool estimates your benefits using:

  • Standard maximum CCB amounts per child
  • Income-based benefit reduction (phase-out)
  • Basic GST credit thresholds

The estimate reflects how benefits typically decrease as income increases.

Example Calculation

If you enter:

  • Income: $45,000
  • 1 child under 6

The calculator will:

  • Start with the maximum benefit
  • Reduce it based on income above the threshold
  • Show your adjusted monthly and annual payments

Tips for More Accurate Results

To improve accuracy:

  • Use your latest filed tax return
  • Include all household income
  • Double-check children’s age categories
  • Avoid rounding large income amounts

Important Limitations (Read This)

This calculator provides estimates only.

Actual payments from the Canada Revenue Agency may differ because:

  • Benefits are based on Adjusted Family Net Income (AFNI)
  • Additional credits or reductions may apply
  • Provincial programs are not included
  • Special situations (shared custody, disability benefits, etc.) are not factored in

When to Use This Tool

This calculator is most useful if you want to:

  • Estimate how much support you may receive
  • Understand how income affects your benefits
  • Plan your finances before filing taxes
  • Compare different income scenarios

When to Check Official Sources

For exact figures, always confirm with your official CRA account or benefit notice.
